Well Child Exams Q & A

What are well-child exams?

Well-child exams are routine appointments that help you and the Altamont Family Health & Integrative Medicine team monitor your child’s growth, development, and overall health. Scheduled when your child isn’t sick, they’re a great way to stay ahead when it comes to your child’s general wellness.

Amanda looks closely at how your child is growing physically, emotionally, and socially and offers guidance as your child reaches new milestones. During a typical well-child exam, Amanda:

  • Measures your child’s vitals (temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure)
  • Checks height, weight, and growth patterns
  • Provides a comprehensive physical exam
  • Reviews developmental progress and behavior
  • Offers immunizations
  • Discusses nutrition and sleep habits
  • Conducts a hearing and vision test
  • Addresses any concerns you have

It’s also a great time to ask questions about anything from how your child is doing in school to behavior issues to picky eating.

How should I prepare for well-child exams?

A little preparation can go a long way. To make the most of your visit, consider these steps:

Bring your notes

Write down changes noticed in your child’s behavior, eating habits, sleep, or health. These specifics can give Amanda valuable insight into your child's well-being.

Make a list of questions

The visit allows you plenty of time to ask anything important to you about your child’s health.

Encourage your child to speak, too

If your child is older, encourage them to engage with Amanda and ask questions about what’s on their mind.

Bring helpful documents

If your child receives accommodations through school or daycare, such as an Individualized Education Program (IEP), bring a copy to help Amanda better understand what your child needs and how she can provide the best support.

With some prep work, your visit becomes more than just a checkup; you and the team become partners in keeping your child healthy.

How often does my child need well-child exams?

Here’s a general guideline that the Altamont Family Health & Integrative Medicine team  recommends:

  • Newborn: 2–3 days after birth, then again at two weeks
  • Baby: At 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months
  • Toddler/preschool: two and a half and three years old
  • Elementary age and teenagers: up through age 18, once a year
